Colourful Cartagena – Colombia

A fascinating city where the past and present tango together in the sunshine of the Caribbean, forever bathed in vibrant colours that seem to spill from every corner, wall, and street. This port city, crowned by the iconic walled Old Town, isn’t just a feast for the eyes—it’s a living, breathing monument to history and culture. Rich in stories, full of spirit, and alive with the energy of its people, Cartagena has become as much a symbol of national pride as it is a UNESCO World Heritage gem.

Historically a bustling hub from the 16th to the 18th centuries, a strategic military outpost and key player in the West Indian trade routes, where naval battles once echoed in the air. Fast-forward to today, and Cartagena’s Old Town is still a magnetic draw for those seeking a glimpse into the soul of Colombia. I love it, as it gets even more alluring with age.

A metropolis that has been through some dark days, which the scars of internal conflicts, even dating back to the times of Simón Bolívar, could have left Cartagena a shadow of its former self. But no. Cartagena has risen and is doing it with a flair. In a turn of events as colourful as the city’s murals, the rise of street art has transformed once-dreary suburbs into vibrant urban hubs, pulling the heart of the city into new, exciting spaces. The art, the culture, the spirit of resilience now spills all over the Old Town, once battered and worn, now stands as a beacon of revitalisation.

And it is not just the art. The upturn in tourism has helped weave the social fabric tighter, creating a city that’s welcoming and open, with a warmth that rivals its climate. To a backdrop of calmness, the streets call you to wander. Best enjoyed on foot, meandering through the winding streets, taking in the cafes, the vibrant restaurants, the city’s breathtaking landmarks, and – of course – the ever-present backdrop of the city’s towering city ramparts.

As my photos show, this is a city that keeps revealing new treasures at every turn. Whether it’s the surprising oasis of wildlife in the small central park – home to monkeys, sloths, tamarins, and parrots; the sprawling port – where yachts, tall ships, and gigantic container vessels compete for space); or the maze of backstreets – lined with lazy cafes, summer tunes, and walls bursting with street art. There’s always something to discover.

Without doubt, one of the highlights of Colombia, and a place that should be at the very top of any traveller’s list. So, take your time. Explore, relax, and let the city’s energy wash over you.

Founded by the conquistadors in the 1540s and named after Cartagena in Spain, you will soon discover that it is a place where the past is never far behind. The key port for Bolivia’s silver, a hub for trade and conquest, its history is as layered as the city’s streets.
